St James’ Church, a Grade II listed building in the Diocese of Blackburn, dates back to the 12th century, with its Perpendicular-style tower added around 1500. The nave, built in 1817, features three large arched windows on the south side that required restoration due to stone fracturing from corroded iron pins. Our repair work was carried out alongside the restoration of the stained glass.

Lyons Stonework managed the project from start to finish. This included matching stone, conducting condition assessments, planning the works, templating, scheduling, cutting, shaping, and refixing the stone on site.
We sourced local gritstone to match the existing masonry, transporting 5-tonne blocks to our Ramsbottom yard. Masons used templates for precise measurements and cutting lists were sent to the saw shop for processing. Banker masons shaped the tracery by hand, and the finished masonry was installed by fixer masons on site. The entire process was completed in-house without external contractors.
